1. Who We Are

The Tutor AI is operated by Ethan Pyatt (UK). This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights under UK GDPR and the UK Data Protection Act 2018. If you have any questions, contact us at support@thetutorai.app.

2. Lawful Basis for Processing

We process your personal data on the following lawful bases:

• Contract — to provide the service you have signed up for
• Legitimate interests — to enforce usage limits, prevent abuse, and improve the service
• Consent — for advertising cookies on the free tier (you may withdraw consent at any time)

3. What Data We Collect

• Email address — used to create and manage your account
• First name — used to personalise your experience
• Questions you submit — stored to power your learning history
• Usage data — token counts used for rate limiting and cost management
• Accessibility preferences — font, contrast, and motion settings stored locally and in our database
• AI-generated images — concept illustrations generated on your behalf and cached in our storage

4. How We Use Your Data

• To provide and improve the service
• To generate AI explanations via the Anthropic API
• To generate educational images via the Stability AI API (Pro accounts)
• To enforce fair usage limits
• To personalise your learning experience

We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not use your data for behavioural advertising or profiling.

5. Third-Party Services

• Supabase — database and authentication (EU servers). Your account data and history are stored here.
• Anthropic — AI model provider. Your questions are sent to their API to generate explanations. Anthropic does not use your inputs to train their models under the API terms.
• Stability AI — image generation API (Pro accounts only). Concept prompts are sent to generate educational illustrations.
• Stripe — payment processing for Pro subscriptions. We do not store your card details.
• YouTube — video recommendations (no personal data shared with YouTube via our service).
• Google AdSense — advertising on the free tier (see Google’s privacy policy for details).

6. Children and Young People (UK Children's Code)

The Tutor AI is a service likely to be accessed by children and young people. We comply with the UK Age Appropriate Design Code (Children's Code) and take the following steps to protect younger users:

• We apply high-privacy default settings for all users
• We do not profile users for targeted advertising
• We collect only the minimum data necessary to provide the service
• We do not use nudge techniques or dark patterns
• Geolocation is not collected or used

If you are under 13, please ensure a parent or guardian has reviewed this policy and agrees to your use of the service.

If you believe a child's data has been processed without appropriate consent, please contact us at support@thetutorai.app and we will delete it promptly.

7. Data Retention

Your data is stored for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all associated data is permanently removed from our systems within 30 days. Stripe retains billing records as required by law.

8. Your Rights (UK GDPR)

You have the right to:

• Access the data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your data (“right to be forgotten”)
• Object to how we process your data
• Data portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format
• Withdraw consent at any time (where processing is based on consent)

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@thetutorai.app. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the ICO (ico.org.uk).

9. Cookies

We use the following types of cookies:

• Essential cookies — Supabase session cookies required for authentication. Cannot be disabled without breaking the service.
• Advertising cookies (free tier only) — Google AdSense sets cookies to serve personalised ads. These may include __gads, __gpi, and related identifiers used by Google's advertising network.

You can opt out of personalised Google advertising at adssettings.google.com. Ads-free access is available on our Pro plan.
